Summary

I caught the train from York to Horton-in-Ribblesdale changing at Leeds. I was surprised to see how much busier it was here, during the week, compared to the North York Moors and The Peak District. The weather was ok but mist on top prevented any good views. A border collie dog appeared from out of the mist during the final part of the walk I presume the owner was somewhere near. My peace was shattered soon after reaching the top by hordes of walkers many of whom were complaining that their cell phone signal was none existant. Oh dear! The walk distance was about 7 miles.

Limestone Way - Litton/Miller's Dale/Matlock

5th & 6th October 2010

I know this area quite well from the past and I was keen to walk the section from Millersdale to Matlock. I can't think why I didn't start from Castleton now, perhaps time was against me getting somewhere convenient to stay at night. Anyway, I travelled by train from York to Sheffield and connected with the Sheffield train to Hope. I then caught a Hulley's 173 bus to Litton but missed the connecting bus from Litton to Millersdale, hence the walk began from Litton.

Summary of walk

Day 1. Litton to Miller's Dale            2.5 miles.
            Miller's Dale to Middleton  10.8    "

Day 2. Middleton to Matlock            8.5 miles.

Campsites

Before I decided to b&b I was aware of campsites along the route at Blackwell, near Miller's Dale, Monyash, Lathkilldale, Birchover & Matlock.

General Information

During preparation for the walk I found the TIC Matlock very helpful together with the website at http://www.visitpeakdistrict.com/

I thoroughly enjoyed the walk although I have no plans to walk the Matlock to Rocester section. I will however be completing the section between Castleton and Miller's Dale hopefully within the next twelve months.

From Matlock I caught the train back to York changing at Derby.
